Taking the Fizz out of Soda Contracts:
A Guide to Community Action

Developed through a grant to the Public Health Institute

California Project LEAN (Leaders Encouraging Activity & Nutrition) developed this guide to help individuals or groups of people trying to combat school district soft drink contracts. Over the past couple of years, state and local California Project LEAN staff have mobilized with other partners to fight soda contracts in a multitude of communities -- including Los Angeles. While there have been some great success stories - such as when Los Angeles Unified, the second largest school district in the nation, banned soda and other sugary drinks - there is much work to be done in this arena.

This guide provides an array of resources that can be utilized when discussing school district policy on soda and other sugary drinks with parents, students, community members and school decision-makers. The guide includes fact sheets on youth soda consumption and the related health consequences. It also details the commercial implications of school soda contracts and provides a school soda report card that can be used to determine the potential health impact of soda on a school campus. This guide includes all this and more.
